Chronology of cameras Carette
The La Parisienne popularization camera, in the 9 x 12 format, was designed and marketed in 1894 by A. Carette, a photographer in Paris.
Its construction in waxed walnut is quite traditional with its assembly using mortise and tenon joints. The main uniqueness lies in the crafted and rounded shapes of the front plate that supports the lens. This part is fixed to the flap by pegs and locking receivers, offering two possible positions.
The focus can be refined by moving the front part. It involves a simple sliding of the central part of the flap, which is inserted into two grooves. Two locking knobs ensure fixation after achieving focus.
A removable viewfinder can be adapted on top of the camera.
Two congress-thread screws allow tripod mounting. This specimen was equipped with a rounded handle made of blackened wood.
The lens mounted on this specimen is a simple achromatic one, with a cap shutter. Light entry regulation is done by adding washers of different sizes. The camera could also be sold with an achromatic lens equipped with a circular front shutter.
A similar camera was marketed in the same year by the Parisian manufacturer A. Dehors under the name Hirondelle.
